The Story of Byeongangsoe 2016:  In Search of Humanity’, is a reinterpretation of the Byeongangsoe-ga, a historical pansorirepertoire based on a story about a horny husband named Byeongangsoe and Ongnyeo.  I reinterpret this story in light of various recent events in Korea, as well as the global situation of Imperialism, Nationalism, Post colonialism, and its turbulent impact world-wide.  ‘The Story of Byeongangsoe 2016:  In Search of Humanity’ is an attempt to bring out to the surface the homo sacerof our contemporary society. Like Byeongangsoe and Ongnyeo, they are tough, resilient,  humorous; and like Byeongangsoe and Ongnyeo, they are those who have been expelled from the symbolic and are ‘the others’

The Story of Byeongangsoe 2016: In Search of Humanity  2016 Aichi Triennale

Song Sanghee tweaks social situations and relative contexts to bring these issues to the foreground in her artworks. Based on her interest in the voices of others, she works with a broad range of topics such as her personal experience with Korea’s modernization process, identity and myths. She also retells history from the vantage points of minorities and the socially disadvantaged who are not included in the conventional narratives of History, seeking to give voices to the voiceless. For Aichi Triennale 2016, she presents a video installation incorporating theatrical elements. In the traditional Korean Pansori folk play entitled {Byeongangsoe-ga} often seen as a sappy love story, she finds the essence of the tragedy of the oppressed class and the absurdity of society as a whole. Song reinterprets traditional tropes so as to question and criticize aspects of South Korean society such as the recent incident like the sinking of the Sewol ferry and the neglect of marginalized groups of Koreans under the banner of imperialism and nationalism.
